unused pin of receiver in SN65C1168ERGYR

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65C1168

Dear champs,

I appreciate very much if I could get your advise/comment.

My customer uses 2 drivers and 1 receiver in SN65C1168ERGYR.
In other words, the customer don't use 1 receiver in SN65C1168ERGYR (red rectangle in Figure).

Then, the customer treat unused pin of receiver as "connecting 2 inputs of unused receiver to GND", and "open output".
Is this suitable treatment for unused pin?

If no, could you please let me know how should the customer treat unused pin of receiver?

Thank you and Best regards,
Tsuyoshi Okayama

  • Hello Tsuyoshi Okayama,

The pin 5 output will be unknown, but that does not matter.  There is no harm using this termination.
I personally prefer open inputs to save a little supply current (300uA).

  • Tsuvoshi-san,

the ouputs of some older RS-422 and RS-485 receivers tend to oscillate when both inputs receive the same potential. I am not sure how old the SN65C1168 design is, therefore I would connect one input to Vcc. Connecting pin 6 (2A) to Vcc will make the output High, connecting pin 7 (2B) to Vcc will make the output Low.

    best regards,
