SN65HVD75: run at low rate as in SN65HVD72

Part Number: SN65HVD75
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD72,

Hello,

Due to the shortage of SN65HVD72, I am considering to use SN65HVD75 as the substitute in a current board.  From the data sheet, they are pin compatible but the signal rate of the SN65HVD72 is up to 250Kbps while the SN65HVD75 is up to 20Mbps; ad hence the ac characteristics, particular on the driver side, is much faster in SN65HVD75.  However, it says up to 20Mbps but does not provide the minimum signal rate for the SN65HVD75.  My question is if I could run the SN65HVD75 in the low rate as in SN65HVD72?  Will there be anything I need to watch out?  I understand the power consumption is 40mW higher in SN65HVD75 but we can live with that.

Thanks,
Adam

  • Adam,

I'm notifying our RS485 expert to comment as needed, but yes, the SN65HVD75 can be used at lower data rates. As you pointed out though, some of the AC timing parameters are faster on the HVD75 due to the need of faster slew rates for the faster overall data rate. Otherwise, it will work fine.

  • Adam,

Like Eric said, running SN65HVD75 at low data rates should function. The potential issues may be about EMI or signal integrity due to fast edges.
