TUSB546A-DCI: design consideration for DP to USB src/sink?

Part Number: TUSB546A-DCI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB544, TUSB564, TUSB1064, TUSB422

Team,

Can you please help with the below follow up questions.

USB3 is not require. Here are 3 possible options are:
TUSB544 –> TUSB544
TUSB546A –> TUSB564
TUSB1046A –> TUSB1064

a)Is TUSB546A required even if USB3 is not used?
Are there additional options apart of the one above?

b)Which cable lengths can I compensate with the components mentioned above (depending on the cable cross-section)?

c)What additional components do I need to be able to use Alt Mode (signal rotation depending on connector orientation, PD controller... )?
Presumably we need the TUSB422 plus an MCU as controller. Anything else needed?

d)Do the USB controllers run stand-alone? Are these fully programmed and ready to run immediately?

e)What are the advantages of the TUSB546A/TUSB564 devices over the TUSB544?
Obviously, the TUSB544 does not have a mux for flipping the polarity, does it? How does the flip feature work then?

Thanks in advance!

A.

  • Hi A,

Can you clarify the exact application here? I will answer as best I can. Please put some time on my calendar as it would be easier to explain over a call and answer all you questions.

    a) This depends, is customer using a USB-C connector no the source? If so then TUSB546A should be used in order to handle cable flip.

    b) Cable length can be up to 2m max but this depends on the cable construction.

    c) a PD controller is required for these kinds of applications

    d) By USB controller do you mean a USB Host. All the devices mentioned are only USN redriver+mux and do not act as the origin of the USB data.

    e) The mux feature is the main consideration here. TUSB544 does not handle the routing from the USB-C connector unlike TUSB546A/564. FLIP in the TUSB544 is used to ensure the correct lane are active in the correct directions since this device is bi-direction on all 4 lanes.
