TPD3S044: Availability?

Part Number: TPD3S044
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD3S014,

We just started production of a series machines for our customer where we use the TPD3D044 as USB protection device (including current limiter). We have 6 USB ports per machine so each machine (PCB) uses 6 of these devices. At this moment we are starting a series of 50 so we need 300 of these parts. However the problem is that the lead time is extreme long and we can not find any supplier where these devices are on stock. The TPD3S014 could in fact be use as an alternative but in that case the current limit is lower and our customer asked us for USB ports that can handle more power at the USB supply output. Do you have a suggestion because we can not find an alternative (pin compatible) for this and our PCB supplier is waiting for a solution. And what is the reason for this extreme long lead time for this product? We are aware of the problems on the chip market but the lead time for the TPD3S044 seems very long at this moment.

  • TPD3S014 is protection for Type-C. Is this for a Type-C USB application? TPD3D044 is not a type-c device, so TPD3S014 is not a replacement of TPD3D044.

  • We do not use typical USB C application but standard USB so in fact 0.5A should be sufficient. However our customer wanted USB ports that can deliver more power so they are able to connect devices that needs more then 0.5A so therefore we decided to use the TPD3S044 but we have huge problems with production because the lead time of these devices is extreme high so we can not wait for that. In the meanwhile we agreed with our customer that we can use the TPD3S014 so we have 0.5A current at the USB ports (we use 6 of them because we have 6 USB ports). The TPD3S014 seems to be available at some suppliers but we are wondering why the lead time of the TPD3S044 is so extreme long at this moment? So for this moment it has been solved but we are still wondering if we are going to use these devices in future when the availability is a big issue? Another solution could be a standard USB ESD protection diode array with a separate (poly) fuse but this requires more board space.

    Best regards

  • Chris, thanks for the input, TPD3S014 is for a Type-C and I am not sure if that is suitable for standard Type-A USB. It is best to contact regional TI sales office on parts availability issue.
