TUSB1046-DCI: Schematic Design: Displayport

Part Number: TUSB1046-DCI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB7340, TUSB1046A-DCI, , TPS65987D

Hi everyone, I have some doubts about my design. I'm working on a project where we are using a USB-C receptacle. My device have to be able to support video output and bidirectional data transmission (Dual Role Data I think), and it should be supplied with 9V/3A (Power Sink).  But I'm not sure about USB 3.0 line connections, What should I do with USB 2.0 lines (there is not battery, It is not neccesary battery charger). Is it ok my design?

Thank you so much

  • Hi,

    Some notes:

    • TUSB7340 acts as a  USB Host only. If you wish to support DRD application you will need to USB PHY that can act both as a USB Host and USB device.
    • TUSB7340 is not recommended for new design and has existing errata please be aware.
    • USB2 does not route through the TUSB1046
    • Please use TUSB1046A-DCI instead of TUSB1046-DCI.
    • TUSB1046A-DCI can be used in DRD applications.
    • You need a separate Video source ( ex. GPU) for DP data stream, this would be connected to TUSB1046A
    • Power role swap can be done using PD controller (you may be looking for DRP or dual role power not DRD).
  • Thank for your reply Malik, a few questions about this:

-Can I use HDMI video source or I should convert to DisplayPort?

    - On my design I'm using TPS65987D, it can take the power role swap control, can't it?

    - I don't understand, If I want to use the USB-C as input and output data, this would be Dual Role Data, right?

  • Hi,

Based on your diagram is looks like DRP but if you do want your device to operate as USB Host and USB device you will need a different device to replace TUSB7340. TI does not have USB 3 USB Host that support DRD. I am not expert on PD controller but I believe TPS65987D does support power role swap. I recommend posting a new question using that part number to get the best answer. I would also recommend converting to DisplayPort for this application.
