TPS65988DK: Part Selection for Portable 4-port USB-C Charging Hub

Part Number: TPS65988DK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65988, TUSB8042A

I have a block diagram attached for our design's general configuration, and I've identified a few TI parts that could fit certain needs within the design.  I wanted to confirm that these parts would work as I intended, or if you may have better options for parts of the system.  My block diagram is confidential but I can share it with a product specialist at TI.

Note: This started as a support ticket and I was asked to move it here.

Would it be possible to discuss my system's design and part selection with someone at TI?

Best regards,

Cory

  • Cory,

I like to give a breakdown of they system features that our TPS65988 parts support before anyone gets too deep into planning because it impacts their support and system.

The TPS65988DDH will support Display port Alternate modes as USB3.x

The TPS65988DDJ will support everything the DDH supports plus TBT2 and TBT3

The TPS65988DDK will support everything the DDJ supports plus TBT4 and USB4.

What very broad implementation are you doing?

What reference design for TBT are you supporting (if TBT is supported)?

With these 2 answers, I can direct you to the best support.

    Regards,

    Chuck

  • Hi Chuck,

Our primary goal of our device is charging our battery through USB PD and discharging the battery.  For data transfer, we really just want to be able to connect multiple downstream devices to an upstream host.  I think the highest speed we'd need would be transferring 4k video.  My understanding is that this could be accomplished without thunderbolt support using a USB 3.x hub such as the TUSB8042A.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that is the case, I think we would go with the TPS65988DDH (although we won't support Display Port).

    Best regards,

    Cory

  • Cory,

The only forms of video that are directly supported by type-c are Display Port and Thunderbolt,.  I think you may have mistyped Display Port when you meant thunderbolt.

The TPS65988DDH would be the best part for your needs.

Now to help review your block diagram, the fastest way to get things reviewed is the case where you are working with a TI FAE already because they can  submit a review request in our internal system that is fully private and protected.

The second option which is much less desirable is for you to send me a friend request and for us to communicate via private message.

Please let me know which option works for you.

  • Chuck,

Either option works for me, so we can go with option 1.  Should I post in my current case (case # CS0685955), reference this post and ask for an internal review?

    Best regards,

    Cory

  • Cory,

If you have an FAE, have them post a request on our Internal Forum or have them reach out to me.  This will get the process moving for you.

  • Hi Chuck,

I was just notified on my case that there isn't an FAE assigned to my location.  Is it possible to go with option 2?  I can send you a friend request.

Sorry for the back and forth.

    Best regards,

    Cory

  • Understood.  I accepted your request.
