Hi Team,

I'm using TPS25750 PD controller in my design,

Needed a clarification on the VBUS ESD protection to the PD, the datasheet recommends to use RC snubber to overcome voltage spikes, but also suggests for use of TVS diodes,

My board will be exposed to ESD surges...so which solution is better TVS diodes or RC snubber circuit?

The TVS2200 is the better choice. It is a true TVS protection device and will have superior performance to a RC snubber.

TVS2200 is unidirectional TVS diode...But I need a TVS diode with Bidirectional TVS diode with Surge and transient voltage protection at VBUS input...Can a component be suggested for this?

Reshma,

The TPS25750 has softstart capability, so you really do not require a Bidirectional TVS diode. The TPS25750 will not allow a outgoing surge because of softstart and current limit

Hi Chuck,

The board will be undergoing EMI/EMC testing...so any TVS diodes for protection is not required?

Reshma,

The TVS is not for EMI/EMC. It will improve ESD performance, but it's primary purpose is to protect the power path of the TPS25750 if power surges (high current) occur and also protects against any voltage greater than 21V that is applied to VBUS.

Hi,

I meant is the PD controller capable of withstanding transient spikes that occur in a burst...at very high KV...i.e., IEC 61000-4-4 standards

The controller is not capable of withstanding IEC 61000-4-4 class spikes without the TVS2200. The TVS2200 is specifically designed to address IEC Surge issues.
