TUSB1044: Inquiry USB 3.2 gen2x2 / USB4 / Display port solution

Part Number: TUSB1044
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25750, TPS65983B, TUSB1146

Hi Supporting staff of TI.

Hope this message find you well.

We are currently looking for solutions that can do

1. USB 3.2 gen2x2 (20Gbps)

2. Display port Alternative (2 Lanes with USB 10Gbps / 4 Lanes )

3. In advance USB 4 (40Gbps)

May I know if I can use TUSB1044? but seems only available for case 1 and 2 (2Lanes only)

Would there be any USB mux/redriver solution from TI that support all of them?

Also may I know what PD controller can pair with mux/redriver for Source port role?

Many Thanks

Chenglin WU

  • Hi,

There is not one device that can service all 3 applications. Are you using a SOC that sources both DP video and USB data dynamically? TUSB1044 can support case 2 but Case 1 and 3 require different solutions. We have a new device for USB 3.2 Gen2x2 with planned release early next year ( cannot provide much more detail over E2E). Case  will also need a different redriver solution that we do not have at this time. TPS25750 is a good place to start for PD controller selection. https://www.ti.com/product/TPS25750

  • Hi Malik

    Thanks for the message.

Can we use TUSB1044 for following application?

    1. USB 3.2 gen2x2 (20Gbps) / By configuring as USB 3.1 and 2 Lanes custom mode?

    2. Display port Alternative (2 Lanes with USB 10Gbps)

In this case , what sort of Power delivery controller should we choose? (still the same TPS25750? or can we use TPS65983B?)

    Regards,

  • Hi,

Yes TUSB1044 can be used like this however the USB power management will be disabled on the Customer Alt mode. TUSB1044 natively supports case 2. If you need alternate mode mux (USB and DP originate from different places), TUSB1146 should be used. TUSB1146 and TUSB1044 do not require a specific PD controller to operate either device above could work with TUSB1146 and TUSB1044. TUSB1146 and TUSB1044 can be configured over GPIO or I2C.

PD controller selection should be guided by port role and power path needs.

  • Hi Mark

    Thanks for the feedback

May I ask about your feedback:  " however the USB power management will be disabled on the Customer Alt mode."

What's been disabled actually? what feature will be affected?

Also may I know if any mux+redriver or mux+retimer that can handle USB4 20Gbps/per lane from TI ?

    Regards

    Chenglin WU

  • Hi,

This means that the receiver and receiver termination will remain on at all times. The Customer alt mode lane will not be able to enter lower USB link power states such as U2/U3.

We do not have a redriver-mux available for this application at this time.

  • Hi Malik

    Thanks for the feedback.

    That's really helpful.
