DP83TD510E: Media converter application questions

Part Number: DP83TD510E

Hello,

I’m working on using the DP83TD510E for a media converter application and I have a few questions.

  1. The DP83TD510E datasheet does not indicate this but based what I see on the EVAL board, I can setup the DP83TD510E and DP83822 to run in media converter mode, set the DP83TD510E as RMII Master, run the 50MHz reference clock from the DP83TD510E pin 19 to the DP83822 XI (pin 23), and run the DP83822 in RMII Slave mode, correct?
  2. Do the DP83TD510E pins that drive LEDs set their driving polarity (active high or low) based on the bootstrap status of the LED pin (like the DP83822, datasheet section 8.5.2)?
  3. MDIO and MDC do not need to be used if the DP83TD510E and DP83822 are configured for back-to-back (media converter) mode, correct?  If not, should I just not connect them to anything?
  4. What is a “stretch option” (see the datasheet Table 7-80. LEDS_CFG_1 Register Field Descriptions)?
  5. Do you have any other advice for making sure I get the DP83TD510E and DP83822 setup properly for this application?  I already have the DP83TD510E-EVM.

Thanks,

Cyrus

  • Hi Cyrus,

    Regarding your questions:

    1) Yes, this configuration is valid.

    2) I will need to check with the team on this, but I do believe that this functionality is included in DP83TD510E as well.

    3) MDIO and MDC are not needed assuming the configuration is correct. However, we do advise that there is atleast an option to connect these lines out in case of optimization and/or additional configuration required later in time.

    4) A stretch option is used to essentially increase the duty cycle of the signal going towards the LED. This allows the LED to be on longer than usual per period. This is used whenever the LED is blinking extremely fast, and visual confirmation is needed. However, when exact measurement is needed then stretch option can be disabled.

    5) This EVM can be used as a great reference design to follow to properly set up the application.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
