DS90UB940N-Q1: Do DES side host SOC and SER side host SOC both could be the master

Part Number: DS90UB940N-Q1

Hi team

For DS90UB940NQ1, I see the following mailbox and "master-slave operation in both directions" function:

If the system does require master-slave operation in both directions across the BCC, some method of

communication must be used to ensure only one direction of operation occurs at any time. The communication

method could include using available read/write registers in the deserializer to allow masters to communicate

with each other to pass control between the two masters. An example would be to use register 0x18 or 0x19 in

the deserializer as a mailbox register to pass control of the channel from one master to another.

From my understanding, it means that when both ends of the serializer and deserializer are connected to the HOST at both ends via I2C (for example, both ends hosts are SOC), at this time the hosts on both ends can be I2C masters, they can exchange information through the mail box of DS90UB940NQ1 registers 0X18, 0X19.

Is that understanding right? Another general question is that, when our SER and DES are ready and start to communicate with each other, could the 2 ends of hosts (2 side SoCs) both be the master at the same time? Will there be any conflict? Thank you.

  • Hello,

Your understanding is correct. The mailbox registers allow two masters to communicate with each other to pass control between them.

If the system does require master-slave operation in both directions across the BCC, some method of communication must be used to ensure only one direction of operation occurs at any time. The communication method described above (using the mailbox registers) is a way to allow the two masters to pass control.

If using 94x-Q1 devices, SER or DES registers may be accessed simultaneously from both local and remote I2C masters. Access to remote I2C slaves is still only allowed in one direction at a time.

More information about Multi-Master support is described in sections 7.5.2-7.5.6 in the DS90UB940N-Q1 Datasheet.

    Regards,

    Ben
