TUSB8044A: How to know TUSB8044A is connecting with usb2 or usb3

Part Number: TUSB8044A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987

hi,

my customer use TPS65987 + TUSB8044A and system needs ~4.5W

They want to know VBUS can supply 0.5A(USB2.0) or 0.9A(USB3.0) when there is type c to A cable plug in. So, they can decide if system has enough power to work normally or highlight power is no enough.

Any way to know it?

BR,

frank

  • Hi Frank,

There is no way for the hub to be able to determine the available current from an upstream port, although any USB 3.0 capable port should be able to supply 900 mA.

I am moving this question to the PD controller forum since the TPS65987 has PD features that may be useful here.

  • Hi Frank,

Could you elaborate more on what your requirements are? For PD, it is generally via Type-C to Type-C with some dongle support.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hari,

Customer wants to know the capability of current from host's Vbus. no problem for type c connection.

for Usb 2.0, the host should support 0.5A but not enough for normal operation of their system. for Usb 3.0, the host should support  0.9A and it's ok for normal operation of their system.

so, they want to know if there is any way to know that the connection is usb 2.0 or 3.0 with type c to usb A cable.

I guess that they need special IC to do that?

  • Hi Frank,

Does the customer have a PD analyzer? Also, the customer could check the Data Status register which will show if there's a USB2 or USB3 connection established. Please take a look at the Technical Reference Manual to see the details of the register fields.

    Thank you,

    Hari
