TCAN1043A-Q1: Power dissipation

Part Number: TCAN1043A-Q1

Hi CAN Experts,

Could you please assist in sharing the expected power dissipation for the TCAN1043A-Q1 in the below conditions?

VSUP = 14 V,

VCC = 3.3 V,

VIO = 5.5 V,

TJ = 85°C

RL = 60 Ω,

CL = 100 pF

nSTB = 5.5 V,

EN = 3.3 V,

Typical high load CAN operating conditions at 500 kbps with 50% transmission (dominant) rate and loaded network

Thanks!

Reed

  • Hi Reed,

    Could you double check these numbers? Vcc should be 5V for this device. Perhaps Vio and Vcc are switched? Is one of the digital inputs supposed to be larger than Vio (nSTB = 5.5V)?

    Eric Hackett has an FAQ post regarding the power dissipation of a CAN transceiver. These calculations address the dissipation of the entire CAN circuit (transceiver and termination resistors) so you may have to subtract the Rterm power if you are looking for the dissipation of the transceiver itself. This can be calculated using the Rterm value and the output voltage of the transceiver Vod. Keep in mind this also needs to account for %dom. We can assume that Rterm has no current through it in the recessive state (Vod_rec ~= 0V).
    P_term = (Vod_dom^2 / R_term) * perc_dom

    Let me know if you have any more questions or if there's another calculation missing from these sources.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
