2xUSB2.0 to USB3.0 Hub

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB8020B

Hi everyone,

First of all thank you for your time. I am new in the USB world so forgive me if I get some terminology wrong.

We are designing a board that has a controller with one USB3.0 port (upstream) that should receive data from two USB2.0 High Speed devices simultaneously at 300Mbps each:

For example, the TUSB8020B would achieve that topology. But if I have understood the datasheet correctly the TUSB8020B does not translate the USB2.0 lines to the Superspeed differential pairs. So receiving 300Mbps from each device at the same time would saturate the 2.0 lines, right? Ideally I would like an IC (or circuit) that would translate the 2.0 lines into the Superspeed lines. Would this be possible?

Something similar to this (although it is only a 1:1 translator I think it shows what I want): www.via-labs.com/product_show.php

I am having some troubles finding a suitable chip/solution for my problem from bigger suppliers.

I hope I managed to explain my problem clearly.

Best regards and thank you for your time,

Iñigo

  • Hi Iñigo,

USB 3.x hubs do not translate USB 2.0 traffic to/from USB 3.0 traffic.  Per the USB specification, the USB 3.x hubs route USB 2.0 traffic and USB 3.x traffic on completely separate signals.  I am not aware of any USB 3.x hubs that support a similar transaction translation feature to the Via device.

  • Hi JMMN,

    Thank you for your reply.

I see, that explains why I was having so much trouble finding one that did that.  We will have to rethink our product then.

    Thank you again.

    Best regards,

    Iñigo
