TPS65987D: Configuration

Part Number: TPS65987D

Dear Team,

My customer is struggling with config our USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM.

Could you please advise on their question below ?

Currently we are in the middle of bring-up process to our product , in this product we are using USBC device TPS65987D for PD source.

We are trying to configure the TPS65987D device for supporting auto PD function as USBC source device  (PD of “5v 9v 15v 20v” following sink capabilities ).

We still didn’t succeed making the auto PD to work , when we connecting our device to the USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM as sink , the VBUS led is “On” but no indication for 5v ? 9v ? 20v  at all .

We also checked with voltmeter and we saw 5v is exist always also when the sink required more then 5v .

Please advice ASAP how we could make the PD work automatically ( what is the correct configuration ? what we are missing ? )

Regards,

Nir

  • Asaf,

I forgot to ask, do you have scope capture of the CC line or PD Analyzer trace.

  • Nir,

Let's first check the power duo board.

    1.  Please provide a barrel jack power to the top board and connect the type C cable to both connectors on the Power DUO.

    2.  The press the 20V button by the Barrel Jack.  This will ensure that the source board can provide all 4 contracts

    3.  Check to see that the 5V led lights up on the bottom of the board.

    4.  Then press the 9, 15, and 20V buttons and see if the matching LED lights up.

I have attached a movie of me doing this with a board that I have broken off.  I use the 988 EVM as my source, but the functionality is the same

Can you please provide me with the 987 configuration file that you are using.  It appears that the power DUO board does not think that a PD capable source has been connected?

  • usbc_src_config_se.pjt

    Hi Chuck,

Attached is our 987 configuration file,

    Thanks in advanced,

    Assaf

  • Asaf,

I put your config on my EVM and tested with it and my power DUO board and it functions properly.

Are you able to use the GUI to reflash the power DUO sink board using the instructions provided with the GUI that you are using?

  • Hi Chuck,

Thanks a lot for your quick response.

Did you test the EVN as source device ?

We are trying to configure the TPS65987D device for supporting auto PD function as USBC source device  (PD of “5v 9v 15v 20v” following sink capabilities ).

In your last response you asked me to re-flash the EVM DUO sink board but we are working as source .

    Regards,

    Assaf

  • Assaf,

I tested my setup with the TPS65987D as a source and the power DUO as a sink.  This would match the picture that you provided.

Which board do you want to operate as the SOURCE (DFP) and which one do you wan to operate as the sink (UFP)

  • Chuck,

Correct , this is exactly the test I did , my board with TPS65987D as a source and the power DUO as a sink.

I want to operate my board as SOURCE ( DFP ) .

  • Asaf,

Are you able to repeat the test that I performed?

If it is failing, then I suggest that you reload the power DUO sink board to ensure that it is configured correctly.  Based on my testing, your project with the default power duo sink functions properly as a DFP.
