TUSB215-Q1: TUSB215-Q1 Replace TUSB217-Q1

Hi experts,

TUSB217RGYRQ1 was design win on customer side. Due to the supply issue, they start to evaluate TUSB215-Q1. Can TUSB215-Q1 replace TUSB217-Q1 directly? Is there any configuration need to change?

TUSB217-Q1 is used for car play in vehicle. The cable is 4m,When customer replace TUSB217-Q1 to TUSB215-Q1 directly,  the phone can't connect to car play system. Could you check it for customer. Thanks.

    It is not a direct replacement, TUSB215 does not have the same redriving performance of TUSB217. EQ and DC_BOOST will need different settings of TUSB217 BOOST and RX_SEN. What is the current setting of EQ and DC_BOOST?

    I got details from customer today. TUSB217-Q1 was used for carplay in vehicle. The longest cable between Carplay main board and cell phone is 4m. When customer use cell phone to connect main board of carplay based on TUSB217-Q1, it can work well at 1/2/3/4m cable. When they change TUSB217-Q1 to TUSB215-Q1 based 1m cable, it can't work well when the cell phone battery less than 82%. 

    TUSB217-Q1 is using 3.3V for power supply, here is the schematic:

    When they change TUSB217-Q1 to TUSB215-Q1, the supply voltage also change to 5.0V.

    For the issue, I have two need you help:

    1. When TUSB217-Q1 change to TUSB215-Q1, do we need change schematic? 

    2. We also find in datasheet: TUSB215-Q1 is AC boost, TUSB217-Q1 is Edge and DC Boost, what's the different for those two parameters? Could you share some detail information for this? Thanks.

  • Hi Songzhen,

    TUSB215-Q1 also has a CDP controller integrated that is always enabled. If customer already has a CDP controller on the bus or port cannot handle up to 1.5A current consumption on VBUS then TUSB215-Q1 cannot be used. I also see that TUSB217-Q1 is not connected on both sides of the package this is not the recommended use case for this device or TUSB215-Q1. Customer may consider TUSB216-Q1 but this device has a different package (No "always on" CDP controller integrated).

    1. Not much change should be need in the typical application. This is not typical due to D1x connection.  When using TUSB215-Q1 pin 1 and pin 4 configuration should match Table 3. Design Parameters in datasheet to get the desired configuration. I recommend using low DC boost. 

    2. Edge and AC boost are very similar, DC Boost function is the same. TUSB217-Q1 has different "amounts" of boost as compared to TUSB215-Q1 to allow for better performance. RX_SEN is separate feature only in TUSB217-Q1 to allow boost of smaller signals than TUSB215. This may be the reason TUSB215 does not work in you application.

    Based on your suggestion, customer change TUSB215-Q1 to "low DC boost" mode, the issue changed, it can communication at 1m cable, but it still can't communication in 2/3/4m cable. Is there any suggestion on that? Thanks.

    For "Low DC boost" mode, customer change D10 to 43k resistor. Remove R24.

    Does customer have eye diagram at 1m and 2 m using TUSB215? Based on the result I may be able to offer some suggestion.

    Thanks for your feedback. Customer will provide eye diagram for TUSB215-Q1 later.

    As you talked before, TUSB216 is a better choice to replace TUSB217. Customer also want to evaluate TUSB216. There are two question need you help:

    1. For TUSB216, what's the difference between TUSB216IRWBR and TUSB216RWBR?

    2. For TUSB217-Q1, it has been verified by MFI certification(Test with Car OEM). Is there any risk for MFI if customer change TUSB217-Q1 to TUSB217AIRWBT?

  • Hi,

    TUSB216I has some update for Eye diagram testing, TUSB216 and TUSB216I have the same performance outside compliance testing. I recommend using TUSB216I. I am not sure on MFI testing specifically, If customer is replacing TUSB217-Q1 with TUSB216-Q1 some testing/tuning will be required.

    Thank you for your feedback. When I use industrial version of TUSB217AIRWBT to replace automotive version of TUSB217-Q1. Is there any risk for MFI testing? Could you confirm it for me? Thanks.

    TUSB217AI does not have the same temperature range as the automotive version. MFI testing and application may be affected due to this.
