TPS65988DK: is it useable as simple PD controller?

Part Number: TPS65988DK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65988DJ

Hi all,

is the TPS65988DK useable as simple PD controller or have i use the DH variant of it? (i know it is asked many times but for me there is no clear answer...)

I only need the following:

  • 2 ports, one SRC, one SNK.
  • SRC has to use DRS because its UFP
  • SRC should have at least two power profiles 5V and 9V
  • SNK should request up to 9V
  • BC1.2 is NOT needed
  • Thunderbolt is NOT needed
  • Displayport is NOT needed

if it is not possible to use the DK for this purpose i will accept this. But maybe there is a better answer than "it is for TBT or USB4".

thanks

best regards

philipp

  • Philipp,

The DH variant is the controller that you should use for this setup.

The DK variant has a very different firmware configuration and is targeted at USB4 reference designs.

  • Hi Chuck,

thank you for your message, but your message does not say somthing like: you cannot use this chip because you need special encryption keys from intel to start the firmware or communication or whatever which sounds impossible.

therefore i soldered a TPS65988DK to my board to test if its possible to use it in our project, because the DH is not available at the moment.

I can control every register but i do not get any interrupts and pd is not working. We also tested the DH and DJ Evaluation board which are working fine.

In the forum i found the schematic of DK EVM and i cannot see a major difference to DJ EVM.

Therefore i think the DK should work like DJ.

But if DMC is needed, also this chip is connected via I2C to the DK and is controlling it. Maybe you can provide some documentation for this protocol or any information what to set on i2c to get DK up and running?

    thanks,

    best regards

    philipp

  • Philipp,

The DK device runs a completely different set of firmware and requires a different GUI and configuration tool and it is intended to work with very specific referenced designs that use the USB4 protocol variants, so it is not directly supported on the Web.

    Chuck

  • Hi Chuck,

where can we get from the GUI for our TPS65988DJEVK and get the User Guide for it.
The web link is feeding always to the DH EVK User Guide and this has some differences to our DJ EVK board - eg FTDI vs TIVA and some other changes.

    regards

  • Hi Ivo,

You will have to request this from the TPS65988DJ product page.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hi Hari,

already requested for it several days ago, so let´s wait for response.

    best regard

    Ivo

  • Ivo,

I will look into why the request has not come through.

  • Hi Ivo,

Looking through this request, the TPS65988DJ is intended for applications following a Thunderbolt 3 (TBT3) Device, and the TPS65988DK is intended for applications following a a USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 reference design. Since it seems like your system does not require any version of TBT, the TPS65988DH would be the correct device to use.
