TPS25750: Charger

Hi,

I would like to integrate a USB PD with the TPS25750 in my 10 S lithium-ion battery design. My question: what IC charger would you recommend, ensuring the requirement of 42V to power the 10 S battery while being able to be used with the TPS25750.

If there is no Charger to charge the 10S. Up to how many xS would it make sense to charge a battery pack via the USB PD? If you have a reference design for it, that would be great.

    I am not a battery charging expert.  

    I can say that USB PD is able to sink 20V at 5A for a charger.  The charger will need to provide any power conversion for your battery back.

    The chargers that are supported directly by the TPS25750 are the BQ25731, BQ25713, and BQ25792, but based on your requirements, none of the directly supported chargers will work with your system.

    You may want to reach our charger team for recommendations of what charger to use.

    The highest charge voltage we currently support is 28 V.

    The USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01 incorporates the TPS25750D and BQ25792 with a max charge voltage of 18.8 V.

    The BQ25731 is supported by the TPS25750 and has a max charge voltage of 23 V.

    The BQ25713 is also supported by the TPS25750 and has a max charge voltage of 19.2 V.

    Is there any other charger that works with the USB PD controller and provides more than 23 V voltage?

    Is it useful to increase the voltage directly from the USB PD controller to 42 V with a boost regulator? Do you think it would be useful to increase the voltage value, and up to what voltage value would it make sense?

  • Dear Hussein,

    Correction, the highest battery charge voltage we currently support in the charger portfolio is 26 V. However, these battery charge controllers are buck charge controllers, so you would need an input voltage higher than the battery voltage. This will not work with the TPS25750 because you cannot support more than a 20 V contract.

    Therefore the BQ25792, BQ25731, and BQ25713 are the chargers we currently support with the TPS25750.
