TPS25750: DRP power output

Part Number: TPS25750
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25713, BQ25731, , BQ25792, USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01, TPS54531

When the device is used in DRP and detects a sink is connected and configures the device as a source:

Does whatever voltage is applied by the system at PPHV get applied to the VBUS? should this also be connected to VBUS_IN?

  • Marike,

The TPS25750 has a pair of high voltage power switches.  1 between VBUS and PPHV and 1 between VBUS and PP5V.  The PP5V switch is a source only switch that is used to source the 5V PDO as well as to power the internal analog circuitry of the TPS25750.  The PPHV to VBUS switch is a bidierctional switch under the control of the internal MCU.  The only directly supported devices that provide power conversion for higher voltage sources are the BQ25713, Bq25731, and BQ25792.  The TPS25750 has the ability to control the charger so that the PPHV voltage is always at the proper voltage, current, and direction.

  • Chuck,
the user guide of USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01 says: "For Sourcing capabilities, this design uses the PP5V power path to supply a 5 V source and the PPHV power
    path to source higher voltages."
That means, both switches should be bidirectional. But on the other hand on Figure 3-9 a 5V sourcing of BQ25792 in OTG Mode is shown.
I asked about that several months ago. Maybe you can clarify this again.
I assumed the 5V converter TPS54531 is only needed for higher output currents >3A. Up to 3A, the BQ25792 can also be used as 5V source via PPHV.
But the answer was, the 5V sourcing is entirely provided by the buck converter, which is connected to PP5V.
The next question would be, where could I configure different usage of power paths for low and high current 5V sourcing application at all.

  • Hi Achim,

Chuck is currently out of office and can help you when he returns later this week.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Achim,

I apologize that this response is so delayed.

The TPS25750 requires the PP5V path to be supplied from the Battery in source mode and be capable of supporting 3A of current.  The PPHV path is not configured to support 5V sourcing because it does not have output current limiting.  The PP5V path does support output current limiting.
