TUSB214: Questions about USB HS device design.

Part Number: TUSB214
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB217, TUSB216I

Hi TI Team

I am designing a USB HS device. I need technical help to add the TUSB214.

1. In the above structure, where is it most effective to add the TUSB?
- When Device 1, 2, 3 are all different products
- (1), (2), (3).....What is Best Location?

2. When measuring USB waveforms,
- What are the criteria for using Near End Mask and Far End Mask?
- When the final product is Device 3, do I measure the waveform only at the AP and OTG connectors?

3. What is the difference between Redriver, Repeater and Conditioner?

Thanks

  • Hi,

    1. This truly depends on the trace lengths but (5) would be the best place. Also I recommend using TUSB217 or TUSB216I for this application since many connectors are in the signal path.

    2. In this case your design must pass near end mask at the (2) and (5). In the final product only the exposed port will be tested.

    3. All very similar devices that compensate for ISI losses in the high speed signal. Repeaters tend to have input and output decoupled, recreating the data at its output based on the input..

  • HI Barton

Thanks to you, many questions have been cleared.
Just a few more questions about USB waveform measurements.

    2. In this case your design must pass near end mask at the (2) and (5). In the final product only the exposed port will be tested.

    Q)
    1. What are the criteria for using Far end mask and Near end mask respectively?
    2. Is it not necessary to pass the Near end Mask near the AP?
    3. Do I need any other device besides the osiloscope?
    4. Does the measurement position change depending on Upstream and Downsteam?

  • Hi,

I recommend reviewing section 7.1.2.2 High-speed Signaling Eye Patterns and Rise and Fall Time of the USB 2 spec as this will answer most of your questions. Near end mask  and far end mask are defined at the exposed connector where the USB device would be connected (USB-C connector). Oscilloscope and USB test fixtures can help complete the test. Measurement position is symmetrical, that is to say it is the same between Upstream and Downstream.
