TPIC8101EVM: Issues Connecting to USB Board

Part Number: TPIC8101EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA450Q1EVM, PGA460

Have been using the PGA450Q1EVM kit successfully until now.

GUI is now unable to connect to USB hardware and TI-GER board led is off when plugged in.

Programming jumper is removed.

Requesting the Get Firmware version using Direct TI GER Control returns no values.

There appears to be no communication between board and GUI.

Could a firmware update resolve this issue and is it possible to flash from this state?

Thank you for the help.

  • Hello,
    Thank you for your question,

LED off on the TI-GER board leads me to suspect the error lies there.

Is the 5V reference jumper populated on the TI-GER board?

the steps for connection to the EVM are as follows:

    1. Connect TI-GER board to EVM.
    2. Connect and power EVM (12V is ok; current drawn should average 7mA).
    3. Connect USB from TI-GER to PC. (When you plug the TI-GER board in, does a green LED toggle on the TI-GER board?)
    4. Open GUI. (When the GUI is opened, does the green LED remain solid on the TI-GER board?)

Please let me know if you have any questions

    Thank you,

    Jacob

  • Hi Jacob,

I have followed your procedure and do not see the green LED toggle on at any point.

We do have a second PGA450Q1EVM kit here functioning without any issues which leads me to believe this is not a setup mistake.

Copying the exact same setup, including all jumpers, I see no status LED come on after being plugged into computer.

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • Hello Jack,

I'm sorry to hear that did not help resolve the issue.

I am surprised the status LED did not change states.

Would you be willing to try testing the non-functioning kit with parts of the functioning kit? This would require trying the non-functioning TI-GER board with your functioning EVM and the functional TI-GER board with the non-functioning EVM.

This will help us isolate the issue, and understand where the problem exists.

    Thank you,

    Jacob

  • No worries Jacob. Since I do have a second set, I am still able to progress.

It would be great if I was able to save this board however.

I can confirm the working TI-GER board is able to communicate with both EVM boards.

There is no change in response for the non-working TI-GER board despite swapping EVM boards.

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

Thank you for conducting the board swap, this seems to confirm it is an issue with the TI-GER board.

It may be possible to debug the issue in the TI-GER board, but TI does not have any published documentation for the TI-GER hardware. If possible, it may be beneficial to check the most important connections to the TI-GER board to see if a faulty component is present.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to replace the TI-GER board without purchasing either the PGA450-Q1 EVM or another EVM such as the automotive knock sensor EVM which uses the TI-GER board.

Alternatively, the PGA460 EVM can be obtained which uses an MSP430 launchpad for interfacing with the newer PGA460 device.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

    Thank you,

    Jacob
