CAN communication issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR2433, TCAN4550

Hi team,

Here an issue may need your help:

The MSP430FR2433 does not have a controller that has CAN communication capability inside. The customer would like to know is it necessary to design a controller module IC for CAN communication and a CAN transceiver outside? And could you recommend an IC for a control module for CAN communication?

And I have looking for help from the MSP team: https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/msp-low-power-microcontrollers-group/msp430/f/msp-low-power-microcontroller-forum/1060371/msp430fr2433-can-communication-issue

Could you help double check this case? Thanks.

Best Regards,

Cherry

  • Hi Cherry,

I agree with the TCAN4550 recommendation from the MSP Team. This is an external CAN transceiver with integrated CAN FD controller. It can interface with the MCU through SPI to send and receive CAN FD information from a CAN bus. The TCAN4550 is powered from a battery voltage through Vsup (5.5V - 30V) and generates its own 5V supply for the CAN transceiver. It also has a Vio input to set the logic levels so it is safe to interface with a 3.3V MCU.

Let me know if this sounds like a good solution and if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
