MAX3232E:Background for add 1μF capacitor on new revision datasheet

Part Number: MAX3232E

Hi Team,

MAX3232E datasheet on new revision (Rev E) is add "1-µF capacitor is required between VCC and GND to meet the specified IEC 16000-4-2 rating" from old revision.

①My customers consider the placement of 1µF capacitors a common design matter. Please tell me the reason why it was added to the data sheet.

②Does the addition of a 1µF capacitor be required for die-changed products?

Your prompt support would be highly appreciated, thank you!

  • Hello,

①My customers consider the placement of 1µF capacitors a common design matter. Please tell me the reason why it was added to the data sheet.

This is common practice to add bypass capacitors between VCC and GND. This helps to short high frequency noise components to GND which cleans up the supply before delivering power to the device. This revision was added to meet the ESD standards provided by the IEC spec. However, I did notice that the datasheet states 16000-4-2, but I believe the correct ESD standard is IEC 61000-4-2. I think this was a typo on our end. This will be corrected in our next revision of this datasheet.

②Does the addition of a 1µF capacitor be required for die-changed products?

Minimum of 1-uF capacitor is required between VCC and GND to meet the specified IEC 61000-4-2 rating for D, DB, and PW packages only.

    Regards,
