DS160PR822: Where is it better to place redriver?

Part Number: DS160PR822

My question refers to all common PCIe redrivers, but in particular I ask about DS160PR822.

What is the best practice - to place PCIe redriver in the first half of line (closer to a transmitter) or place it in the second half of line (closer to a receiver)?

I assume that PCIe redriver has better TX-path than common CPUs or something else. So, I place redrivers in the first half of line what allows me to get good RX signal and do hi-quality TX-signal, provided by redriver. Am I right or not?

  • Hi Andrey,

Section 5.1 of this Application Report describes the optimal redriver placement for PCIe Gen4 applications. Essentially, a redriver should not have less than 14dB of loss on it's pre-channel. So if you are using one redriver for both upstream and downstream channels, it is best to have it somewhere right around the middle. If you have separate upstream and downstream redrivers, then you can offset them so each one is closer to their respective receiver. Please read the linked application report for more information.

    Thanks,
