SN65HVDA1040A-Q1: SN65HVDA1040A-Q1 on 24V systems

Part Number: SN65HVDA1040A-Q1

In the datasheet, the recommended operating conditions for SN65HVDA1040A-Q1 is -12V to 12V for bus pins.

Can SN65HVDA1040A-Q1 work in a system with 24V battery?

If not, what would be the "recommended" replacement for 24V systems?

  • Hi Yuri,

Yes, this device is suitable for 24V systems. However, I would recommend a newer transceiver such as TCAN1044A for more margin here.

The recommended values represent the common-mode range of the CAN receiver. While the bus common-mode is within this range (typically ±12V), the receiver will continue to operate within datasheet specifications. Outside of this range, the receiver characteristics may differ from datasheet parameters, but the device will not be damaged unless the absolute maximum rating is exceeded (±58V for TCAN1044A). In most systems, communication is expected to be disrupted during a short-to-battery fault, but will require that the transceiver is not damaged. Both of these devices will support such a requirement for a 24V system.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
