ESD PROTECTION

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD4E001, TPD1E10B06

I used the ESD protection IC TPD4E001 ... but is doesn't work without series resister  .So it must to connect  the resistor  in series & what its max value .

but when i used series resistor in communication line  of  i2c then my communication get halted.. so give me proper solution about how to used TPD4E001.

  • The TPD4E001 is supposed to work without the resistors. Can you please send us a schematic? Also how do you establish that the TPD4E001 is not working? Is it by looking at the scope waveform of is it just because the device being protected is damaged? Is it possible to send us the part No. of the device being protected?

  • Thanks...

But i tested the tpd , tpd is basically clapping diode array so it clap the ESD voltage  .. but without resistor it doesn't clap the voltage..

& i also attached the sample schematic .... please go through i4645.SAPLE SCHEMATIC 1.pdft

  • please give the reply as early as possible... on how to used tpd4e001 without resistor

  • Umesh,

Can you please explain how you know that the diodes are not clamping? Is the TPD4E001 damaged or is there damage to the main controller? Also since ESD performance is very sensitive to layout, Can you also send me the board layout .

    Thanks,

    Akhil.

I attached the pdf file about how i tested the tpd4e001.. & and i also simulate same on Proteus software ..& also tel me  it is required to connect cap between vcc& ground pin of tpd.  Becauseof technical problem i cant  send you layout ... so please give the conclusion on this topic so further proceed to my work ..

    awaiting for your reply...

    Thank You

  • Umesh,

Based on your description of the test, it looks like you apply a 15V DC to the TPD4E001. The TPD4E001 is an ESD protection device that is designed to react fast to handle extremely short duration surges (1-3 ns).  It is not meant to handle the continuous power dissipation from a DC event. When you use the series resistor it limits the current through our device and therefore it is able to survive and this is the only way the TPD4E001 can be used in your application.

    Akhil.

  • Dear all,

Same issue of TPD4E001 failure i found in my device....i have used 1 k resistor in series in line which i need to protect ic for ESD.....

when TPD4E001 fails at that time...pin of vcc and gnd becomes short....only option for me to replace with new TPD4E001,  ... but this is not a solution...

TPD4E001 fails frequently ....i dont know....the real problem of TPD4E001 ic failure...please suggest me any alternative solution of this problem...

    Regards & Thanks,

    Rohit Prajapati

  • Hello Rohit,

We do have a much more robust (+/- 30kV contact rating vs. TPD4E001's +/- 8kV contact rating) with TPD2E2U06DRL. A TPD2E2U06DCK is being developed and should sample later this year. The DCK package is a drop in replacement yet the DRL still allows flow-through routing. TPD2E2U06 series does not require VCC.

Please let me know if there is more I can do to help.

    Regards,

  • Hi all ,

I need robust ESD solution for GPIO lines which are used for external connection's , currently using  TPD4E001 , it frequently getting fail , so please suggest me good solution.

    Working voltage level is 5V.

    Regards,

    Rohit

  • Rohit,

What frequency are you working with?

TPD1E10B06 will work for 30kV but has higher capacitance so it cannot be used on higher speed lines. is it under 400MHz?

    Regards,

    Cameron

  • Hi Cameron,

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes we don't have speed above 400 MHz ,so we can go ahead with this IC.

    Regards,

    Rohit
