DP83848I: Question about compatibility with Military Grade Part DP83848-EP

Hi Experts,

Good day.

A valued client have this design utilizing P/N: DP83848IVV/NOPB and would like to know if it is at all possible to use P/N: DP83848MPHPEP in it's place.

While pin out and functionality is the same the military grade part has an added thermal pad. Their current design does not support this thermal pad.

Could you please advise if there would be any dangers associated with using the military grade part without the thermal pads? I think it would be fine for DP83848MPHPEP to left its thermal pad floating as it would just operate the same temperature range with the DP83848IVV/NOPB part.

Also, upon checking, the two parts have different feature: (COMPARISON LINK). Would they still compatible?

Thank you for your guidance.

Regards,
Archie A.

  • Hi Archie,

The biggest concern would be the -EP PHY getting hotter due to the lack of thermal dissipation from the GND PAD not being connected. I would advise checking the thermal information (specifically junction) on both datasheets and complete calculations to ensure that PHY does not get too hot and exceeds Absolute Maximum rating.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
