DP83822I: Standalone DP83822i PHY

Hi,

I am testing a scenario in which DP83822i PHY is not connected to an Ethernet controller, i.e. Tx, Rx and other pins are not connected to an Ethernet controller via RMII.

I can read from and write into its register using MDIO, but when I connect it to my PC via a network cable, Partner Capability is not set in  Auto-Negotiation Link Partner Ability Register (ANLPAR) register and none of LEDs change their status. even the ethtool on PC does not show any change in link status.

I wanted to ask, if DP83822i can send and receive advertisement and configure itself even if no Ethernet Controller is connected to it via RMII interface? In another word, can a standalone DP83822i PHY advertise and configure itself in auto negotiation mode?

    Hi Akbar,

    Yes, the PHY can be configure without connecting to MAC. Please reference to the table 8-11 mode of operation and table 8-10 4 level strap pin to find the requirement for the auto-negotiation pin setting. You may also enable the auto-negotiation bit to 1 in the register 0x0000 to check if the auto-negotiation complete between the link partner.
