TPS65988: sink and source question of TPS65988

Part Number: TPS65988

Hi Team,

I have some questions as below

1. How to judge the sink and source of TPS65988.
2. If 2 ports are connected to power, what kind of processing mechanism will there be?
3. If 2 ports are connected to the power supply, (we are the receiving end), does the power stage need oring or something to handle the power?

We appreciated your great support!

Many Thanks,

Jimmy

  • Hi Jimmy,

    1. I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly. Are you asking how to configure the TPS65988 as sink and source? If so, you can do this in the GUI Configurations for the device. Specifically the TX source/sink capabilities registers will show which PDOs are supported.

    2. The negotiation will depend on how the PD controller and the two ports are configured. If they are both the same and can sink the same amount of power or if 1 port is source and 1 is sink.

    3. If both ports are sinking power, you can configure it this way, however, you will need to make sure the system is designed to sink the power and that the ports are independent.

I would recommend taking a look at the Hardware Design Guideline app note and the Power Path and Performance app note from the TPS65988 Product page.

    Thank you,

    Hari
