DP83867CR: Availability of the DP83867CR

Part Number: DP83867CR
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869

Hello,

I have an application that currently uses the Qualcomm / Atheros AR8031 which seems to no longer be available or orderable anywhere. I would like some help finding the best TI part that would be a good replacement for the AR8031. In my initial look, the DP83867CR seems to be a good candidate, but is not available anywhere. Here are my questions.

1) Please let me know which part TI recommends in place of the AR8031. Are there any other TI parts that would be recommended over the DP83867CR?

2) Aside from functionality, please let me know what parts with same basic functionality as DP83867CR can be available in quantities of say 30 parts within 4 weeks and at least 200 parts within 12 weeks.

Thank you,

Randy Holmberg

  • Another related question I have is in regards to software compatibility. Please let me know if replacing the AR8031 with DP83867 would be expected to require software / driver updates to function properly for a given application. It seems like the RMII interface is standard enough that our embedded software should not have to know or care that the physical device has been changed, but that is most likely wishful thinking on my part. Please comment on whether you think it is likely that software would be impacted or not with a PHY change of this nature.

  • Hi Randy,

    1. Yes, if you are using fiber application, I recommend DP83869 over DP83867. Other than that, DP83867 would be a good choice.
    2. I will discuss this with the marketing team and provide you with the result sometime this week or early next week.
    3. I need a clarification on RMII interface because I did not see a RMII interface in AR8031. Regarding to the Linux driver software, please take a look on the following website: https://www.ti.com/tool/ETHERNET-SW

  • Hi Hillman,

Thank you for your prompt response. I appreciate your comments and will look forward to any help with availability of the DP83867.

For our application, we are using an RJ45 with integrated magnetics not fiber. Also note that the AR8031 (see data sheet attached) in our current application has both SGMII and RGMII interfaces - our application uses the RGMII pins on the AR8031. It looks like the Linux drivers would be needed for some special functions like loopback mode and IO pin control that we are not using. My guess is that we should not need device specific drivers to allow basic functions of the DP83867 in RGMII mode work same as our existing AR8031 in RGMII mode, but again that may be my wishful thinking. Our application is WEC2013 so that if we do need device specific drivers I would imagine TI would not have those available. AR8031_DS_(Atheros)_Rev1.0_Aug2011.pdf

  • Hi Randy,

    • I will let you know as soon as possible for the availability on 867 PHY.
    • I will double check with my team on the Linux driver requirement and let you know by tomorrow.
