DP83640: IEEE 1588 PTP

Hi team,

I know DP83640 and DP83630 can support IEEE 1588 PTP, but my customer would like to find a 1GnE PHY which can support IEEE 1588 PTP.

May I know if you have the recommended devices?

I see DP83867 and DP83869 can support IEEE 1588 SOF. What the difference between IEEE 1588 PTP and SOF? It seems like two different protocols.

Could you please help give some comments?

Hi Ivy,

We don't have any GbE devices which support 1588 PTP.

However, DP83867 and DP83869 support SFD/SOF(Start of Frame Detection) which generate a signal when Start of Frame is detected. This is helpful for the MAC to eliminate the inaccuracy in time stamping caused due to the PHY. This is a feature which will be of a little help for MAC which runs the complete 1588 protocol.

The 1588 PTP functionality is a wide range of functionality where the PHY can process the timestamp, store them, run the timestamp counters.
