TCAN1463-Q1: Sizing of termination capacitor

Part Number: TCAN1463-Q1

Hi,

I'm interested in your TCAN1462 and TCAN1463 devices.

We're planning to communicate at 5MBits/s, and I would like to know if you have some data regarding the value of the termination capacitor :

Does a high value (4.7nF) have an impact on the quality of the signals ?

Thanks for the help !

Regards,

Dorian

  • Hi Dorian,

The main purpose of the split capacitor is to help filter out any common-mode noise. Because the CAN signal itself is differential (CANH - CANL), the common-mode ([CANH + CANL] / 2) does not directly impact the integrity of the signal. However, common-mode noise has other negative implications in a CAN system, namely emissions. Therefore it's favorable to filter out energies in the common mode.

The value of the split capacitor can be chosen specifically to target problem frequencies in a given system. Typical values for this filter are between 4.7nF and 100nF. Starting with 4.7nF is common, and this value can be changed if there is a particular frequency you identify during testing.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
