DP83TD510E-EVM: DP83TD510E and DP83822 connection without CPU

Part Number: DP83TD510E-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TD510E

Hi Team,

My customer have question to DP83TD510E-EVM.

From following block diagram, DP83TD510E connects with DP83822 through RMII, there is no CPU(MAC) between them.

Customer wants to know can other standard PHY also connect like this?

For example, 10BASE-T1L PHY to 10BASE-T1L PHY (Repeater) , 10BASE-T1L PHY to 10BASE-T1S PHY(Ethernet converter)

My understanding is this connection is called RMII back-to-back connection and only device supporting RMII back-to-back connection can do this(DP83822 in this case), correct?

Thanks.

Regards,

Jo

  • Hi Jo,

You are correct. We can use any PHY which support RMII repeater mode with 10Mbps speed support.

  • Hi Gokul,

    Thank you for the reply.

I looked up DP83TD510E and understood it supports RMII back-to-back connection.

May I ask how can I know if a PHY(i.e., DP83822) supports RMII back-to-back connection or not?

I looked up DP83822 datasheet but I couldn't find any information about it. (Is RMII master and RMII slave in datasheet related to this?)

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Jo

  • Hi Jo,

Our products DP83822/825/826 support RMII back to back connections.

For this, we need to do the following configuration changes.

    1. The combinations that can implement a back to back connection are RMII Slave - RMII Slave (with the same 50MHz oscillator source to both PHYs) or RMII Master - RMII Slave
    2. We need to configure CRS_DV pin to RX_DV programmability and connected to TX_EN of the other pin.

Please let me know if you have any other queries.
