DP83867E: Unsuccessful to established link

Hi,

Customer is encountering issue with their new PCA to connect with old PCA using this IC. PLease see details below.

I am using the DP83867 ethernet IC and we are having trouble creating a link to the device. Would something like the DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM be helpful? Could I connect that to my pc board under test and use it to help figure out my issue.

We have an existing qualified ethernet PCA that were are using to communicate to our new PCA which is equipped with the DP83867. Repeated attempts to establish a link with our new PCA have been unsuccessful and we are hoping to have something we can use to easily monitor the signals and read/write the registers of the IC on our new PCA.

I see there is a linux driver for USB to MDIO would that be a better option for debugging this issue?

Hi Maynard,

Yes 867 EVM are helpful for the debug. 867 EVM is a stand alone board that can program with USB to MDIO.

Hi Hillman,

Just received response from customer and have some follow up questions, please see details below.

"How would I connect the MDIO from the EVM to the MDIO of my board? Direct wires to the clk and mdio? Is some other sort of interface needed? Is there an output connector/port on the EVM that would be used? A quick sketch of the setup would be appreciated"

Hi Maynard,

connecting MDC, MDIO, and ground pin should be enough of the MDIO use case.
No there is no extra interface needed
The red circle are the output connector/ port on the EVM board. Here is the diagram:

Did customer use launch pad to read the registers? If so, please do show customer the following USB to MDIO user guide:

So if I am using the Launchpad why wouldn’t I just use the output MDIO and MDC connections on the MSP430F5529 and use those to directly connect to my PHY chip and read/write the registers?

Hi Maynard,

I am not sure if I understand your problem correctly. Is customer planning to input a MSP on there own PCB? If so, they can connect the MDC and MDIO pins directly between the PHY and MDC and MDIO pins, but make sure they do have a pull up resistor on the MDIO pin.
