TDP158: Can TDP158 be used to pre-emphasis the HDMI2.0 signal?

Part Number: TDP158

Hi team,

Customer use a camera module in their products, the signal is 6Gbps 4k@60hz  with HDMI2.0 interface. they want to make sure the signal can be transmitted to 5 meters. Can TDP158 be used to pre-emphasis the HDMI2.0 signal for this application? If not, could you recommend the correct device and give some application proposals for it?

Thanks a lot。

Do we know if this 5m cable meets the Category 2 specification as defined in HDMI1.4b spec?

The TDP158 TX can provide 3dB de-emphasis, but my expectation is that the corresponding RX would also help by providing an equalization function.

    Thanks

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for your reply.

I am not familiar with this application. Could you tell me what is the the Category 2 specification as defined in HDMI1.4b spec?

Do you mean we also need a RX chip for the receive side, work together with TDP158? Do you have any suggestion for that?

Is there a application note that I can study?

Since I can't share the HDMI spec, I will point you to this link on the cable type, https://www.tripplite.com/products/hdmi-cable-types.

How long the cable can be supported depends on the cable and RX itself. Most RX will have an internal equalizer to compensating for the cable loss if the cable is within the HDMI spec. And DP158 TX can help to a certain extent if the RX equalizer can't completely handle the cable.

But if the cable is not compliant to HDMI spec, then it is difficult to say how long it can be supported.

The best bet is to take a DP158 EVM and physically test it out with the 5m cable.

    Thanks

    David
