DP83848I: Collision Detect Signal

Hi,

We are currently using PHY from Intel, LXT908. Due to its obsolescence, we are switching to DP83848I. Our application is for 10Base2.

In present PHY, collision signal coming to PHY is differential signal but DP83848I has single ended pin (pin 26). In the reference schematic of DP83848I, collision functionality is not given. Could you please provide a reference schematic which has collision signal functionality? RX and TX are differential pins, why collision is single ended? Is there a way to connect this to co-ax connector?

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

DP83848 supports only 10Base-T and doesn't support 10Base2. I don't think we can do simple work-arounds to make it work.

Is there any chip in TI which supports 10Base2?

Also for DP83848I, if we can take care of collision signal by using differential to single ended converter. Will it work?

Hi Soumya,

I am not aware of any TI Ethernet parts which support 10Base2.

From what I understand from the 10Base2 standard, the collision detect needs some special circuitry inside the PHY which are not present in DP83848.

10Base-T standard is also defined for separate differential lines for transmission and reception whereas 10Base2 standard looks to be defined for a single coaxial cable where transmission and reception happens on the same line.

So, I don't think we can make this work with differential to single ended converter.
