TPS65994AD: Source 100W with external power path?

Part Number: TPS65994AD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65994

Hi Team,

Can any of the TPS65994x family source 100W with the external power path?

  • Hi Neal,

Yes, if you take a look at the datasheet for our devices, there is a block diagram which can show the capabilities:

The typical application for this is sinking on the external path, however, theoretically, the sourcing is also capable.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hi Harry,

Per the datasheet and this block diagram, it appears that the external power path can only SINK 100W. The block diagram arrows are only pointing in the sink direction compared to other PD controller block diagrams that depict this arrow bidirectional.

The looming question then is how do you configure the TPS65994 to source power using the external power path (and disabling the internal power path)?

  • Neal,

You would just configure it the same way in the GUI. You would need to set the power path appropriately to choose the external path. In addition, you would need to set the Source PDOs accordingly.

I will confirm internally as well and get back to you tomorrow or early next week.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hi Hari,

Following up on this thread, please confirm if and how to configure external power path for sourcing 100W.

  • Hi Neal,

Yes, I have confirmed you can configure the ext. power path to source 100W. However, this is assuming you would still be providing the 5V to the internal power path.

    Thank you,

    Hari
