Can re-drivers and re-timers reside on same SMBus

Part Number: DS280DF810
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS280MB810,

Hello TI Team,

I am in the midst of preparing schematics for a design that includes a number of DS280MB810 redrivers.

While doing so, it occurs to me that it may be wise to include the possibility that we could drop down a DS280DF810 retimer for some of the redrivers if we should ever need the extra-reach provided by the retimers. They are footprint compatible and the datasheets even recommend such an option, if ever it is needed. Therefore,  I have a few questions and requests:

  • Can the DS280MB810 (redriver) and DS280DF810 (retimer) be situated & programmed on the same SMBus?
  • Can a single EEPROM support a combination of MBs (redrivers) and DFs (retimers) on a single SMBus?
  • Or, do MBs and DFs require different EEPROMs and be located on separate SMBus chains?
  • Can the 25MHz CAL_CLK originate into a MB (redriver) and traverse through a combination of MB and DF devices?
  • Can you provide secure account access for me to the DS280DF810 datasheets and support documentation?
  • Also, can you provide SigCon Architect Updaters for the DS280DF810 and DS280MB810 that are compatible with version 3.0? I already have an updater for the DS280MB810, but it is not recognized by version 3 of the SigCon Architect tool (I installed version 2 on my PC, but it doesn't work, so I prefer to work with version 3 if possible).

Best Regards,

-Mark

  • See inputs below:

    • Can the DS280MB810 (redriver) and DS280DF810 (retimer) be situated & programmed on the same SMBus?
      • Yes, as long as devices sharing the I2C bus have unique slave addresses
    • Can a single EEPROM support a combination of MBs (redrivers) and DFs (retimers) on a single SMBus?
      • No. You would need distinct HEX files for retimer and redriver
    • Or, do MBs and DFs require different EEPROMs and be located on separate SMBus chains?
      • Correct
    • Can the 25MHz CAL_CLK originate into a MB (redriver) and traverse through a combination of MB and DF devices?
      • Yes. technically the MB does not use the clock but it will output a buffered replica of CAL_CLK_IN on CAL_CLK_OUT
    • Can you provide secure account access for me to the DS280DF810 datasheets and support documentation?
    • Also, can you provide SigCon Architect Updaters for the DS280DF810 and DS280MB810 that are compatible with version 3.0? I already have an updater for the DS280MB810, but it is not recognized by version 3 of the SigCon Architect tool (I installed version 2 on my PC, but it doesn't work, so I prefer to work with version 3 if possible).
      • We do not have version 3.0 profiles available for these two part numbers. You need to user version 2 for them; it should work.

    Thanks,
