TCA9617B: Repeater used in SM Bus can be used in PM Bus?

Part Number: TCA9617B

Hi Team,

Customer wants to double check if their original design using TCA9617B as SM Bus repeater can be extend to support PM Bus ?

The MPU is TMS320F28034PNT.

Just curious in H/W electrical spec perspective, PM BUS should be same as SM BUS, correct?

Thanks a lot!

Andrew

  • While PMBus allows higher speeds than SMBus, that 400 kHz is already supported by plain I²C. In all other regards, PMBus is a protocol on top of SMBus.

So yes, the TCA9617B will work.

  • Hi Andrew,

As Clemens pointed out. TCA9617B should work if you are operating within the acceptable frequency.

TCA9617B is a repeater device built for I2C. PMBUS and SMBUS are subsets of I2C and are both open drain protocols which makes the TCA9617B compatible from a repeater standpoint. Your PMbus/SMbus devices are still expected to be able to drive below the VIL on B side below 0.4V.
