TPS25750: For 25750EVM and TIDA-050047, is the 5V DCDC necessary ?

Part Number: TPS25750
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-050047,

Hi TI engineers,

I have some problem about power path of TPS25750.

I want to build a  bi-direction DRD USB type-C(up to 65w) PD + Charger solution, so I refer to TPS25750EVM and TIDA-050047

what puzzles me is there is 5V DCDC connected PP5V and the TIDA-050047 said 'this design uses the PP5V power path to supply a 5 V source and the PPHV power
path to source higher voltages', so in 5V output source application why not output 5V through PPHV bi-direction power path?

I know PP5V also in charge of PPCABLE supply(VCONN),  so 5V supply is necessary, my purpose is let PP5V just for PPCABLE use no for VBUS use and replace 5V/3A+ DCDC with a LDO(just need small current capacity) for cost down, can it works? is the 5V DCDC necessary ?

TIDA-050047 list some configuration case in APPLICATION GUI TOOL, It just has the configuration I need, as shown in the blue circle in the figure below:

but when I use the GUI tool, the configuration case which I needs disappeared, why?

Last question, the external device need 5V output, which REG of TPS25750 decide PP5V or PPHV power path output 5V????

  • Stanley,

The PP5V connection is used to power some of the internal analog logic.

The lower figure that you have shown in your question is the TPS25750S which has an external power path.

    Regards,

    Chuck

  • Hi Chuck,

1.I know PP5V connection is used to power some of the internal analog logic, so it's necessary, my question is can we use a LDO not  a DCDC to supply PP5V?because it can be cost down

2.I want  all power levels(5V 9V 12V 15V 20V) to be output through PPHV, when the TPS25750D act like a source. just as the TPS25750 Application Customization Tool User's Guide shows:BQ only,no DCDC needed.

3.when I use the GUI tool, the configuration case which I needs disappeared, why? I didn't find this BQ only configuration option.

  • Stanley,

The device is not setup to allow 5V to pass through the PPHV path, so I cannot support what you are wanting.

We require that a 5V buck capable of supporting the 3A power path is in the system,.

The GUI capture that you are showing is from an initial GUI that had an error in the figure that implied that the 5V buck boost was not needed.  This was an error on our part and has been removed.

Unfortunately, the cost down that you are attempting is not possible.
