TCA4311A: Does the in and out mark for the SCK and SDA have some means?

Dear MR/MS:

      We use TCA4311ADR as a buffer between our control board and an IO card, both the control board and the IO card insertion into a backplane board, and the buffer is on the control board. We will always plug and unplug our control board during debugging phrase, and occasionally we also plug and unplug the IO board. Now we have some queries about this buffer:

       Per the figure 9 from the datasheet, seems all these  4  pins, including SDAIN,  SCLIN, SDAOUT and SCLOUT are Bidirectional, does it means no matter how we connect these 4 pins, it will work and behave same? Or is it better to connect the SDAIN and SCLIN to our control board, and SDAOUT and SCLOUT to our IO board? Thank u.

  • The I²C protocol itself is bidirectional.

    But the power-up functionality is different: it assumes that SDAIN/SCLIN is connected to the backplane, and it waits for that bus to become idle before it connects the other side to it (section 8.4.1); also see figure 12.

  • Hi Liz,

    I just wanted to first point out that I do not recommend using the TCA4311. I always recommend to go with the or upgrade to TCA4307 which comes with the stuck bus recovery feature. Or you could go with the TCA9511 which is just an updated version of the TCA4311. Both devices are p2p with the TCA4311.

    To confirm what Clemens said we show it on the schematic diagram:

    The backplane MUST be connected to SDAIN and SCLIN in order for the device to work properly and be hot swappable.
