DP83TC814R-Q1: difference in DP83TC814R-Q1 vs DP83TC811SWRNDTQ1

Part Number: DP83TC814R-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TC812R-Q1

Hi ,

I wanted to know the difference between the DP83TC814R-Q1 vs DP83TC811SWRNDTQ1.

what is the use of WOL, JTAG and TC10.

What is the difference between JTAG and debugging tool kit?

Do we need to configure the PHY controller by writing the software?

Thanks,

Chandra

  • Hi Chandra,

Please shared what is the requirement for your system and we will shared the corresponding parts.

    • WOL is the wave on land this is used to send a signal on GPIO base on a define packet on the line
    • JTAG is a standard for testing continuity etc... You may find more detail online
    • TC10 is a standard define low power mode entry exist protocol
    • Debugging tool kit contain feature like signal quality indicator builds in data generator and checker etc...

  • Hi Hillman,

    Thanks for the response.

Below is the requirement of our product:
-->Have 100BASE-T1, AECQ100 compliant, 16 or 32-bit controller, better to have the cryptographic engine, support firmware upgrade option, 2UART, ADC, GPIOs, PWM, low power consumption. The end application is for autonomous vehicles.

So if we have the host controller with PHY+MAC this would be a better option if not then what is the PHY controller and MAC controllers list you recommend.

Does the JTAG option mandatory for the PHY controller? do we need to program the PHY controller?

If debugging tool kit is present then do we still need the JTAG option?

    Thanks,

    Chandra

  • Hi HIllman,

    Thanks for the reply.

the DP83TC812x-Q1 controller is suitable for us.

-> Looking for the MAC controller to interface with DP83TC812x-Q1 PHY controller. Please provide the TI MAC controllers list.

--> Do we need to configure the PHY controller registers? If YES, How do we configure it?

-->its not mandatory for the PHY controller to have WOL and JTAG support ??

    Thanks,

    Chandra

  • Hi Chandra,

    • We don't have the details on MAC controllers list. Please repost this question to appropriate E2E form.
    • It will be useful to configure PHY controller register for debug and other application. Connecting MDC and MDIO with a pull up resistor on the MDIO between the PHY and MAC can configure it. Please refer to pin configuration session on datasheet for more information.
    • We do have WOL in 812 PHY but JTAG support is not mandatory.

  • Hi Hiliman,

    Thanks for providing the details.

Where can I find the TI MAC controllers list? If there are no MAC controllers from TI then is it okay to use the microchip MAC controller to interface with TI PHY controller?

    Thanks,

    Chandra

  • Hi Chandra,

All the information are on the TI.com. Our PHYs can support the MAC within IEEE standard.

  • Hi Hillman,

We saw one MAC controller TI TMS570 series which supports MAC but it is a high-end controller which might not be suitable for us. Can you provide another MAC controller details? Since we wanted to use both MAC and PHY controllers from TI.

    Thanks,

    Chandra

  • Hi Chandra,

We don't have the detail on the MAC controller side. If possible, please post the forum to microcontroller team? They will point you to the appropriate expert to help you on this questions.

  • Hi Hilman,

I am able to see 4 MAC controllers.

We decide to use the DP83TC812R-Q1 PHY transceiver. you mentioned that we could configure the PHY controller using the MDIO(SMI) method. What is the use of the bootstrap approach to configuring the PHY without using the MDIO interface?

    Thanks,

    Chandra

  • Hi Chandra,

Bootstraps will read in the initial operating mode when the PHY is powered up through resistors in various pins. The detail will be in session 8.5 in the datasheet.
