DS26LV31T: Application Inquiry

Part Number: DS26LV31T
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE, THVD1505

Hello Team,

My Customer is working with an IC DS26LV31T that has the output pin rated to 7KV ESD HBM Human Body Model which is about 150ns long. However, they are trying to protect from lightning which is a much longer surge pulse of 120usec. Is there a way to correlate the short ESD rating to a longer surge?

They do have external protection, but some of this lightning strike surge feeds throughto the output.

Regards,
Renan

  • The internal protection is able to handle ESD strikes because those are extremely short and contain very little energy. A surge of 120 µs, even at a relatively low voltage, is likely to burn out the internal ESD diodes.

If you cannot stay inside the absolute maximum ratings, then you need more protection. The datasheets of more modern devices have suggestions; see, for example, section 11 of the THVD1505 datasheet.

  • Hi Renan,

Clemens is correct - the ESD specifications are not referring to surge currents but short ESD strikes (much shorter than 120us).

The best parts for this would be our surge protected devices:

    https://www.ti.com/interface/rs-485-rs-422/products.html#p2192=Surge%20protection

These may still require additional protection diodes.

If this IC that is being used can't be changed out - additional external protection would need to be added to shunt the extra current from the lightning strike and protect IC. This could be done with TVS diodes or similar structures - but they must be surge rated. TI protection devices may be able to handle these strikes depending on the actual specs that you are trying to protect - however with high power surges like this you may need higher power diodes.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Best,

    Parker Dodson
