ONET1191V: Verify communication

Hello,

we are using the ONET1191V VCSEL driver for an upcoming project. Currently we do not have the final PCB available but do tryouts using a hand-soldered mock-up without actual VCELs.

We got a software-driver ready, that to the current knowledge adheres to the timing and protocol requirements specified in the data sheet. Due to timing constraints we would like to have some way to verify that the communication to the ONET1191V works with the mock-up.

So the questions are:

- Is there any way to get feed-back from the device on the Two-Wire Digital Interface?

- If not: What would be the preferred way to check the device functionality via "Hardware-Feed-Back"?

Hi Sebastian,

You can write and then read from Equalizer register(reg 0x03)) to confirm 2-wire interface is working.

Could you explain, how reading the register works? I think there is no description about reading registers on the ONET1191V in the datasheet (The device does not support standard I2C, but uses a 3-bit addressing scheme without ack and without the usual read/write bit).

Hi Sebastian,

This is a 2-wire interface where we can just write into the registers. START and STOP is similar to I2C but this is where the similarity stops. To check if you are talking to the device properly, you can enable/disable or toggle equalizer enable bit. This part was developed in 2006 and does not have I2C capabilities.

I actually could measure some voltage-change in the output of our mock-up when the equalizer enable bit is toggled.
