DS90UB953A-Q1EVM: Maximum data rate provided by internal pattern generator

Part Number: DS90UB953A-Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ALP

Hi,

I'd like to know what is the maximum data rate provided by DS90UB953A-Q1EVM internal pattern generator, and also to check if a 1920x1080 frame, 50 fps ,  RGB888 pattern can be generated by it.

Best wishes,

Newton

  • Hello Newton,

The maximum video throughput that can be generated by PATGEN and sent to the deserializer is the same as the device's supported video throughput, which is 3.3Gbps. You can calculate the video throughput with the equation:

    Video Throughput = HActive x VActive x (Frame Rate) x Bits-Per-Pixel x Overhead (Assume 25% if unknown)

Using the equation above, your desired video throughput is about 3.11Gbps, which is below the max limit supported by the 953A device. The 953A device can support a PATGEN output with your desired video timing.

You can download ALP and use the built-in PATGEN tool to enable PATGEN on the 953A device and have it output your desired video timing. You may also refer to Section 7.6.4 Code Example for Pattern Generator in the 953A datasheet to see an example configuration of the PATGEN registers that are implemented in the ALP tool as well.

Please keep in mind that the deserializer device also needs to support your desired video throughput. For example, you can pair the 954 or 960 deserializers to the 953A device and receive the 3.11Gbps of video data, but the 936 and 962 devices will not be able to support receiving that much video data from the serializer.

    Best,

    Justin Phan
