TUSB1046A-DCI: ac-coupling caps are needed or not to support both USB3.1(Gen2) and DIsplayport

Part Number: TUSB1046A-DCI

Hello,

My customer would like to connect TUSB1046A-DCI to either USB3.1(Gen2) or displayport via USB typ-C cable. Depending on whether the TypC cable is connected to USB3.1(Gen2) device or displayport device, RX1P/N and RX2P/N pins would be either Tx or Rx. In this case, should RX1P/N and RX2P/N pins have ac-coupling caps like TX1P/N and TX2P/N pins in the Figure 28 of the datasheet?

Best regards,

K.Hirano

  • Hello,

For connecting a DisplayPort sink over Type-C, AC coupling capacitors are not required on these pins because the DP Alt Mode over Type-C spec for cables bridging USB type-C to DP is to include coupling capacitors internally.

But coupling capacitors can be added on the RX side optionally for ESD protection per the USB ECN - see the attached document for more information. Please note if they are included, the value must be 330nF to meet the minimum required total series capacitance.
