TVP7002: TC358748 video input compatibility with TVP7002

Part Number: TVP7002

Hello TI,

I am working on one application where I require to make HW to convert one channel VGA input video to MIPI CSI-2.

I have selected TVP7002 to convert VGA video input to parallel output port. Now I want to use TC358748 from Toshiba (Datasheet: toshiba.semicon-storage.com/.../docget.jsp ) , which support parallel input to CSI-2 output conversation.

I have tried to create block diagram for video block.

But I am new into video processing and interfaces, so help to find out correct interface.

I am not sure, if TVP7002 and TC358748 are compatible on parallel output and input port. Help me to answer below queries:

1. TVP7002 output modes supporting RGB/YCbCr 4:4:4 and YCbCr 4:2:2, while TC358748 are supporting only YUV422 (CCIR/ITU 8/10 bit), YUV444, RGB888/666/565 and RAW8/10/12/14. Which parallel interface should I use, so these ICs can be used together?

2. TVP7002 has HSOUT and VSOUT signals, which are horizontal and vertical sync signals. While TC358748 has HVALID and VVALID signals which seems to not sync signal. Can I use HVALID and VVALID inputs to connect to HSOUT and VSOUT signals?

3. TC358748  is supporting YUV422 8 bit ITU BT.656 and ITU BT.601 while TVP7002 does not support 10-bit 4:2:2 YCbCr output format. Suggest me video format to use for these interface.

Thanks,

Ronak

  • Hello Ronak,

I am not sure if I will be able to address this question with my limited technical background, but I will review this in more detail once back from holiday leave tomorrow and see if there is any advice I can help offer regarding this.

  • Hi Ralph,

Thanks for reply and looking into it. Yes, let me know if more information are require on our requirements and interfaces for these ICs.

    Thanks,

    Ronak

  • Hi Ronak,

So I'll preface all of this with noting I am not an expert by any means on these video devices. Typically I would just reference that we state no design support on the product page, but I wanted to try and take a crack at this since its mostly a datasheet question.

From what I can tell, the TVP7002 outputs either 30 bits or 20 bits of data. That's based on Table 6. Meanwhile for the TC358746 I am not seeing any indicators that it can handle a 20-bit input. If I'm right on that it probably makes the other comments here just academic.

    2. TVP7002 has HSOUT and VSOUT signals, which are horizontal and vertical sync signals. While TC358748 has HVALID and VVALID signals which seems to not sync signal. Can I use HVALID and VVALID inputs to connect to HSOUT and VSOUT signals?

I think they can be treated as sync signals. They changed the nomenclature but originally they were SYNC signals:

    3. TC358748  is supporting YUV422 8 bit ITU BT.656 and ITU BT.601 while TVP7002 does not support 10-bit 4:2:2 YCbCr output format. Suggest me video format to use for these interface.

This is honestly beyond my ability to help advice with, I don't know enough about these various formats to really provide any guidance here. Choosing correct devices, video formats etc. is beyond what I can help with as far as these devices are concerned which is why they are stated to not have design support available.

  • HI Ralph,

Thank you for looking into it. I check other post on e2e. Found some one is also facing same issue in past. TVP7002 is supporting RBG888, but this is not mentioned into datasheet. Please look into below post. CHeck if some one from TI can help on this.

  • Hello Ronak,

As mentioned, we don't have design support for this part. You are free to reference older posts etc. but what I shared prior is really the best extent that we can offer for support.

  • Hi Ralph,

Is there any new compatible IC available for TVP7002 as alternative?

I am fine, even if this not pin to pin compatible.

    Thanks,

    Ronak

  • Hello Ronak,

    None to my knowledge.

  • Hi Ralph,

We are close to find problem and then solution can be found.

But our SW team requires to monitor HSOUT and VSOUT from TVP7002EVM.

I know TVP7002EVM obsolete, but do you know any distributor with whom this EVM is available, we can buy one from them.

Or check if TI inventory has some spate boards available for us.

    Thanks,

    Ronak

  • Hello Ronak,

I don't have any history with that EVM so I am not sure which distributors might have it. I checked the common ones I know of but none did.

I also couldn't track down any spare EVMs still in TI inventory.

What I was able to find that might help you is the links to the BOM and User's Guide - the latter of which has the schematic.

With these maybe you can remake a version. Sorry that I can't offer more, I was hoping to find the actual PCB design files but had no luck with that...
