DS160PT801: Does it matter which side is connected to ROOT and which is Endpoint

Part Number: DS160PT801

In those figures in the documentation where A_port and B_port are shown, A_RX and B_TX are always connected to the Root port.

Is it okay to swap this so B_RX and A_TX connect to the ROOT?     Is this validated in C0 silicon?

I think this is what the Intel spec refers to Port Orientation?

Same question related to x4 bifurcated ports.  Is it okay for one x4 port to connect to A_RX,B_TX to Root, and the other x4 port B_RX, A_TX to Root?

Thanks,
Tony

  • Hi Tony,

You are correct on all questions.  Assuming the retimer is set to 4x4 bifurcation, the port orientation won't matter for each x4 link.  The root complex or endpoint can be connected to the A_RX or B_RX ports.

An earlier version of our 2-retimer EVM had the first retimer A_RX channels connected to the RC, while the second retimer had the B_RX channels connected to the RX and was able to work for all link widths.  This has been validated.
