DS90UB949A-Q1EVM: HDMI Video Transfer Issue with the Laptop

Part Number: DS90UB949A-Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ALP

Hello everyone,

I am having a DS90UB949A-Q1EVM Serializer kit which is connected to the Deserializer using an FPD Link cable. I have gone through the Serializer EVM kit manual and did the Jumper settings as described in the manual. For reference, I am mentioning the settings of IDx: #2, MODE_SEL0: #1, and MODE_SEL1: #5, I am having an external EEPROM that contains the EDID data bytes.

The setup includes a Serializer, a Deserializer, a Laptop, and a Touch Display device. The laptop is connected to the Serializer using an HDMI cable while the Touch Display device is connected to the Deser side. The problem is that once I connect the HDMI cable to the laptop which is the display source, then the Serializer is unable to forward the display of the Laptop screen to the Touch Screen display. While some of the laptops are working fine but some laptops are not able to detect the Serializer as a Display device/monitor. All the laptops are running Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The HPD pins are asserted when I connect the HDMI cable to the laptop but still, no display is forwarded on the Touch display screen.

I am attaching the register dump of Ser and Deser collected using ALP Tool provided by the TI. These register dumps are collected from the laptop in which the screen is not forwarded.

The technical specifications of one of the Laptop are attached below on which the problem is happening:

Please help me resolve this issue.

Thank you.

Regards,
Vikas

  • Vikas,

Looks like we already have a thread going with you on this issue here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface-group/interface/f/interface-forum/1110815/ds90ub949-q1evm-ds90ub949-q1evm-i2c-interfacing-issue-no-i2c-data-read-using-j20-header-without-alp-tool

So we will continue discussion in the original thread.

    Best Regards,

    Casey

  • Hello Casey,

Actually, in this thread, I am mentioning the issue with the video transfer through an HDMI cable. In the other thread, I have mentioned that I am using MCU to transfer the laptop screen to the Touch display but in this thread, I am asking that using ALP tool also, in some laptops, the laptop screen is not able to transfer over the Touch Screen Display. Please go through the post again.

If you find similarities then we can go to the original thread also, I don't have issues. I just don't want to mix the different problems in a same thread so just started a new thread for this different issue.

    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Vikas

  • Hi Vikas,

Apologies for grouping the two threads together - good idea to keep them separate for clarity.

You mentioned strapping MODE_SEL0 to #1 and MODE_SEL1 to #5 as well as an EEPROM for the external EDID. This combination of straps sets EDID_SEL to look for a remote EDID (EEPROM on Deserializer) first and then use internal SRAM if external EDID not found and also sets the REM_EDID_LOAD to use internal SRAM. Would you please confirm if your EEPROM is local on the Serializer or remote on the Deserializer? I want to make sure you are loading the EDID from the EEPROM as intended.

That is interesting that some laptops work and other do not. Are you able to try the different EDID options in the HDMI tab of ALP to see if any of them work with those laptops (that is, the laptop is able to recognize the 949 as a display. I realize a different resolution may not show on the touch screen at all)? It's possible those laptops just aren't able to generate the resolution specified by the current EDID.

    Sincerely,

    Ryan
