MAX232: Replacement from SN75188NSRG4 to MAX232NS

Part Number: MAX232

Hi team,

In customer's sysytem, SN75188NSRG4 has been used, but customer is considering to repalce SN75188NSRG4 with MAX232NS in next project. Are there any concerns they need to take care about?

+/-12V is applied to SN75188NSRG4. They also want to confirm that they can get same performance with SN75188NSRG4  when they use MAX232NS. In terms of this, could you give any comments?

The data rate is 9600bps.

  • Hi Noriyuki-san,

The SN75188NSRG4 requires a higher supply voltage than the MAX232NS. The MAX232 cannot accept a +/-12V supply - it generates its higher power rail through an internal charge pump. It will have a similar output voltage to operating the SN75188NSRG4 at +/-9V (+/-7V typical) so at +/-12V the SN75188NSRG4 will most likely output a higher voltage magnitude.

The MAX232 also requires external capacitors to complete the charge pump circuit contained within the IC.

MAX232 is 2 channel TX/RX where the SN75188NSRG4 is 4 channel TX only.

What are the requirements for the part in this system because these parts are very different in architecture and I don't think this is the best fit - can you please let me know so I can see if we have a better option for the application?

    Best,

    Parker Dodson
