THVD1520: THVD1500DR drop in replacement with THVD1520DR

Part Number: THVD1520

Hi Team

My customer is using THVD1500DR and encountering a shortage issue. We are considering transferring to THVD1520DR for replacement.

However, the data rate of THVD1520DR is much higher than THVD1500DR and I suppose the receiver input filter bandwidth is different.

Is the potential risk for such kind of replacement?

  • Hi Gabriel,

The THVD1520 can go up to 10Mbps but it can go as slow as you need it to - RS-485 devices with faster data-rates generally just have faster transition times on the driver outputs compared to similar slower devices. The receiver will be able to detect data up to 10Mbps (if not higher) so I don't see much concern.. The biggest difference is that there is a higher amount of energy in the higher frequency range due to the faster transition time on the THVD1520 which could potentially cause EMC issues (unmatched systems with long wires would see this issue the worst usually) - but in general its not a concern in the vast majority of systems.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

  • One more question:

Customer system FPGA using 3.3V I/O voltage level. However, the FPGA GPIO could tolerate 5V voltage.

If we design with THVD1520 (Powered by 5V VCC), the RX data (5V) should be OK for FPGA.

In datasheet, 3.3V voltage level could also been accepted as high logic level for DE/RE and D Pin.

I suppose THVD1520 could work in this system without level shifter, am I right?

  • Hi Gabriel,

That is correct - the THVD1520 has a VIH(min) of 2V so a 3.3V signal will be a "high" so there shouldn't need to be a level translator between the FPGA and the THVD1520.Since the FPGA is 5V tolerant it should be good for receiving data as well.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!
